Hi, I am Darren John
I like to produce expression rich, character driven illustrations.
Creating for me is by no means an escape, but a journey... And oh boy how I'm enjoying the ride! Since moving to Birmingham in 2005, I've had the opportunity of working on a variety of creative projects with some really great minded folk.
Something to share? I'd love to hear from you.

Following from the successful 2009 show at Stolenspace gallery, The Decked project returned this year to showcase a diverse selection of artworks by 60 international artists and illustrators. Having previously exhibited in 2009, I knew immediately I'd chomp the hand off from this years invite!
I showcased my The Catch piece, which shows a lonely old man's desire and inability to find love. I'd like to say thankyou for all the interest and kind words I've had about this painting, much appreciated!
I am proud to announce the coming together of FourPence and to celebrate the launch of the new collective site, I have put up the Mural and Viral Video we recently did for Desperados. Over 20,000 photos were taken throughout the week we spent getting busy with cans and brushes, and every one of them was worth it!
I'd definately recommend getting yourselves some tickets for The London Freeze Festival and Boardmasters to see the bar in the flesh, as well as all the awesome fun that will be going down at both events this year!
I spent an afternoon with the lovely folks over at CutOut recently and we printed up a few colour variations of the keyboard from my NotMyType piece, onto 100% cotton tote bags. The prints look fantastic and I still can't decide which one to take for myself!
Each colourway has a limited run of 10 pieces and they are currently on sale over in my shop for £6 (inc free UK P+P).
An Out of Character Experiment is a typographical exploration of 26 letters and a couple characters by 35 different Birmingham based illustrators, designers and artists, all displayed as one alphabet. The exhibition will run in the Created In Birmingham store, opening May 6th and running until June 1st.
Prints will be available to purchase on the opening night (next Thursday) and of course for the duration of the exhibition at a price of £35 framed and £20 unframed but all individual pieces are limited to an edition of 10 for the duration of the exhibition, so be quick to avoid disappointment.
There are some big hitters in the show including Jon Burgerman, Sam Pierpoint and London studio I Love Dust to name a few.
Come along, have a drink and enjoy the work
After some thought, this morning I decided to re-open my Happy Shopper store! Although its a tad premature to be announcing its opening, given that there is only one item in the shop, I couldn’t hold the excitement in ANY longer!
As I mentioned, there’s currently only one item in the shop, but now that I have a solid platform to sell items, I’ll be aiming to get more goodies up more frequently so stay tuned.
I put together a mobile site recently, specifically built for iPhone users. You can now browse through my work and view images quickly and easily in an environment that is optimized for the iPhone browser.
I absolutely love the simple user interface on the Photos app and in the same way that the iPhone takes advantage of gyroscope, gestures and big screen, I’ve applied similar functionality to the mobile site.
If you access www.iamdarrenjohn.com on an iPhone, you’ll be automatically taken to the mobile site; but if you’d like to view the site in its entirety you can, by simply clicking on the icon that is top left on the mobile site’s homescreen (although for best image browsing, I’d strongly recommend the mobile site).
I’ve always wanted an easily accessible mobile version of my portfolio so I’m very excited about having made one! I hope you enjoy browsing the site, both mobile and regular.
An extra large thankyou to those of you who made it to see my wall at the IamyourBarber show in Liverpool and to Ben at FourDown for making it happen!!
It was really nice to see the images I’ve created over the past 6 months all up together, so please enjoy!
Hello one and all, welcome to the new site. Hopefully you're already enjoying your visit and find navigating around the work a breeze.
My aim was to make viewing the images as easy as possible so whether you've got an hour to browse or only a handful of seconds, you'll somewhat have a grasp on what I do.
If you're having a great time or a horrible time, I'd love to hear about it.. so hit me up on the contact form at the bottom of the site! And if you have some time to spare, I'd recommend checking out some of the very talented folks in the links and credits sections.
Darren.

A family of three tomatoes went for a walk one day, when the little baby tomato started lagging behind. The big poppa tomato walks back to the baby tomato, stomps on him, squashing him into a red paste, and says, "Ketchup!"
